Peter Savaryn Obituary

Peter Savaryn fell asleep in the Lord on April 6, 2017, on the day of his wife, Olya’s 87th birthday. Olya and Peter were faithful and loving in marriage for 67 years. Peter devoted his life to Olya particularly over the last 6 years while she was struggling with dementia. Peter was born to Mykhaylo and Anna (Atamaniuk) Savaryn in Zubretz, Ukraine, on September 17, 1926. He is loved and missed by his wife Olya; children, Vera (Paul), Michael (Ustyna) and Halia (Boyan); grandchildren, Luke (Glennie), Svitlana (Justin), Ulyana (John), Thea (Bohdan), Motria (Rajeev), Bohdan (Erin), Antonia, and Julian (Solomia); Marianna, (mother of Motria, Bohdan, and Julian); great-grandchildren, Alexander, Anasofia, and Adria; and brother, John Savaryn. Peter will be remembered as a great leader in the Ukrainian community, and the community at large. He served as the Chancellor of the University of Alberta, and was a builder of many organizations. Prayer Service Sunday, April 9 at 6:00 p.m. at St. Josaphat Cathedral, 10825 – 97 Street, Edmonton. Burial Service and Divine Liturgy will be held Monday, April 10 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Josaphat Cathedral with Cathedral Clergy officiating. Interment in St. Michael’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies.
