James Landels Obituary

Jim was born on Wednesday, January 9, 1929 in Winnipeg Manitoba to Harry and Florence (nee Grainger) Landels. When he was two the family moved to a homestead at The Pas on the banks of the Carrot River. Thus began Jim’s lifetime passion for farming even though at the time he didn’t realize it. The early years on the homestead were sometimes tough but there were many joyous family events to celebrate like the birth of his three sisters Ann, Joyce, and Doreen and a brother Jack. As a young man Jim developed many interests and talents. Besides knowing his way around working the land and caring for animals, Jim was handy with a hammer and saw, he loved hunting and trapping, and had the skill to operate heavy equipment. He also had time to develop many friendships that became life long friends. One night in 1952 at a dance he met the love of his life, Helen Engdahl who was working at the Clearwater Lake Sanitorium. Jim and Helen were united in marriage on July 9, 1954 in The Pas, MB. Due to flooding of the valley in the mid 50’s, Jim and Helen decided to move west to Drayton Valley, Alberta to pursue employment in the oil patch and start their married life and adventure. While in Alberta, Jim and Helen were blessed with the birth of their first child Carol in 1955, followed by Darrell in 1956. After 3 years in Alberta Jim and his family came back to The Pas to farm with his parents and start up his own farm. Soon after they arrived, Robert was born in late 1958, followed by Sharon in 1960 and Mark in 1968. Jim and Helen worked very hard to build up their farming operation and provide a good quality of life for their children. Even though farming was his passion Jim’s first love and priority was his family. He shared many special times with each one of his children always finding a way to thread in lessons of life leading by example. Jim supplemented his farm income with off farm work, mostly in the winter, in various construction and transportation jobs. Jim and Helen’s love for each other and their children was balanced with their drive to build a good quality of life for their family and a home with love, laughter and joy. Over the years their family grew to include grandchildren. Sadly, Helen passed away in 1993 leaving a void in his life that he filled with his children and grandchildren. Jim was blessed with17 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren whom he enjoyed immensely. In the year following Helen’s death Mark and his family moved to the farm and Jim developed a special bond with his granddaughter Allison. Several years after Helen’s death Alice Paterson came into Jim’s life. They enjoyed many years together traveling, fishing, and playing cards. Even though Jim retired from the farm at the age of 65 he spent countless hours helping with seeding and harvest on the farm. Unfortunately, in the last few years, due to his failing health, he was unable to help as much as he wished he could. But he would still know the moment the combines came out of the shed and would get Sharon to drive him around to get crop reports on the yields and to make sure things were done properly. If no one was available to drive him around he would always phone at the end of each day and get a crop report. Jim’s health deteriorated and he moved to St. Paul’s Residence which has been his home for the past 3 years. He passed away peacefully with his family at his side Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at St Paul’s Residence, The Pas, at the age of 88 years. Jim was predeceased by his wife Helen; parents Florence and Harry; grandson Jamie; brother Jack; and sister Joyce.
