Teacher, church and community worker, passed away suddenly and peacefully approximately 12:10 a.m., Monday, February 22, 2010, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, with her family at her side. Born in Truro, she was the daughter of the late Winnifred Gero (Corbin) Gabriel and the late Albert Allan Gabriel. On December 19, 1935, Willena married Elmer Alvin Jones. At the age of 60, Mrs. Jones graduated from the Nova Scotia Teachers College and taught at NSTC Head Start Program and Truro Junior High School. Mrs. Jones, a devoted Christian, was a member of Zion United Baptist Church where she served her Lord, in many positions of leadership to children, youth and adults. She befriended people of all ages and from every walk of life. Mrs. Jones held various positions such as: President of the Multicultural Association of Colchester County, President of the Truro Coloured Improvement League, Member of the Advisory Board of the Education Fund for Black Students, Board Member of the Black Cultural Centre of Nova Scotia, and Member of the Colchester Regional Hospital Mental Health Association. As a volunteer, she taught literacy at the Cobequid Neighbourhood Work Activity Program. Over the years, she designed pre-school, public school programs, and tutored students. Mrs. Jones had been honoured for her leadership and volunteer work on many occasions including: Several community organizations, Federal Government (Canada 125th Medal), Province of Nova Scotia (Provincial Volunteer Week Patron), Town of Truro, Black Educators of Nova Scotia, and Truro Junior High School Junior Red Cross. Mrs. Jones is survived by her children Marie, Truro, Burnley “Rocky” (Sharon), Halifax, Wilma, Halifax, Janice, Vancouver, BC, Luella, Halifax, Lynn, Halifax, Debby, Halifax, Roger, Vancouver, BC; several grand, great and great-grandchildren; brothers, Stan Gabriel, Truro, Aubrey Gabriel, Dartmouth; sister Arlene Noylander, Dartmouth; and several in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Jones was predeceased by her parents, husband, Elmer, eldest daughter, Elaine; eldest son, Alvin; sisters, Helen, Alberta, Ruth, Doris; brother, Albert Mills and infant siblings. Visitation and a musical celebration will be held on Thursday, February 25, 2010, 7 – 9 p.m. at the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro, Nova Scotia. Funeral service will be held February 26, 2010, 2 p.m. at the Colchester Community Funeral Home. Spring interment in the Robie Street Cemetery.
