Harold Penney

Harold Clinton Penney Yarmouth/Sydney It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather on November 20, 2016, in the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. As a young man, Harold joined the Royal Canadian Navy as an apprentice seaman. After serving in the Navy, he worked at many jobs until starting his own company in the late 1960’s. He successfully operated H.C. Penney Ltd. until 1991, when he retired to the life of leisure - RVing and spending the winters in Case Grande, Arizona. Harold was a volunteer fireman for the NAIAD Fire Dept. No. 2 in Yarmouth from 1963-1979, and then at the Frenchvale Fire Dept. from 1982-1994. Harold was a member of the Yarmouth Gateway Dancers, the Highland Capers Square Dancers, the Val Vista Roadrunners, the Bluenose R. V. Squares and the Town and Country Squares. Born August 18, 1935, in Kelley’s Cove, Yarmouth County, Harold was the youngest son of Percy and Emma (Christie) Penney. He was predeceased by brothers, Charles and Walter; sister, Margaret; and daughter, Janice. Harold is survived by his wife, Judith (Flynn, Pledge); his former wife, Olive Rose; sisters, Blanche Billard and Lillian Metzger; son, John (Yvette); daughter, Sharon LeBlanc (Dwayne); stepdaughters, Brenda Pledge, Carolyn Amaral and Patricia Pledge; stepson, Roy Pledge; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, November 23 from 1-2 p.m., followed by a funeral service in the chapel at 2 p.m., with Mr. Gary Grant officiating. There will also be a funeral service held at Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium in Yarmouth on Saturday, November 26 at 11 a.m., with Rev. A. D. “Bill” Newell officiating. Interment in Chebogue Cemetery, Town Point. Those wishing to make a donation in Harold’s memory are invited to consider the Cape Breton Cancer Centre or the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
