Derek Pass

Pass, Derek (of Linwood) Passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Freeport Hospital with friends Ben and Doreen Parkinson at his side. Derek and wife June were married in Owen Sound in 1961 and started married life in Moose Jaw, Sask. Son Derek Scott (Maureen) was born in Moose Jaw, son Gregory Gordon (Nixie) was born in Kamsack, Sask. and son Geoffrey Bruce in Niagara Falls, Ont. Derek and twin sister Brenda were born in Warrington, Lancashire, England in 1935. He and his family, parents Matilda and Walter Pass and his brother Gordon moved to Newcastle Under Lyme then to Brockton, Staffordshire. In 1949, because the bombing became quite severe, the family moved to Scotland. In April 1949, the family travelled down to Southampton and sailed for Canada on the Aquitania. After docking in Canada, they made their way, via train, to relatives on the prairies. After Brandon, Manitoba schooling, Derek worked for a short while for a newspaper, then joined the Bank of Montreal. After a few prairie transfers, where Derek learned and loved curling, he moved to Thompson, Man. where he met June. Derek and family started camping, hiking, travelling and canoeing. Derek continued his love of curling and added skiing, golfing and gardening. He and June enjoyed playing bridge with the Linwood group. Linwood became our last transfer community in 1990. According to Derek's wishes, there will be no funeral or visitation. Cremation has taken place. Fondly remembered by sister-in-law Elizabeth Dornbush and brother-in-law Phillip Dornbush, friend Pauline (Sam) Radcliff, and Miss Kitty. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to The Mennonite Central Committee, the KW Humane Society or the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre (cheques payable to Grand River Hospital Foundation). Donations may be made by contacting the Henry Walser Funeral Home (507 Frederick St., Kitchener, 519-749-8467). Special thank you to the nursing staff at Freeport Hospital, Henry Walser Funeral Home and Nixie Pass who provided special care for Derek's final days. Visit www.henrywalser.com for Derek's memorial.
