Berthold Meissner Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our husband and father, Berthold David Meissner. Bert passed away suddenly at his home in Saskatoon, at Luther Heights Seniors Residence in the morning of Sept 2, 2016 at the age of 91 years old. Bert was born in the family home in Lockwood, SK on February 19, 1925, the third son of David and Julianna Meissner. He spent his childhood and early adulthood in Lockwood, attending school, helping out in his father's blacksmith shop and later working on the railroad before moving to Winnipeg for a winter. Bert found the city life not to his liking, so he returned to Lockwood to begin farming in the district, an occupation that he would continue and love for the next 40 years. On June 30, 1958, Bert wed the love of his life, Frieda Penner of Nokomis and their happy marriage was blessed three years later with the birth of their son Garth. The three of them soon moved into the family home where Bert had been born and he made it the home for his new family. After retiring from farming in 1989, Bert and Frieda continued to lead a quiet and comfortable life in Lockwood, spending their time tending huge gardens and as Bert was likely to say “puttering around” in his shop. Advancing years and some health concerns necessitated a move to Saskatoon in 2002, but they were able to remain independent and lived in their own apartment to the day of Bert's passing. Bert was a man who led with his heart and was never happier than when he could be helping others, often leaving his own farm work to help out a neighbour in need. Farming was his life and he spent many many hours on the family farm with his brother Victor at his side. After the long hours in the field, he still found time to play hockey with the local boys and almost lived in the curling rink. In later years, the tempo changed to that of an active community role, and he served on the Lockwood village council, was mayor of Lockwood for many years, a member and later Chairman of the board for the Central Parkland Lodge in Lanigan as well as serving on a host of other community boards and groups. Bert was also an active member of his church and served on the church councils of Good Hope Lutheran in Nokomis and Trinity Lutheran in Lanigan as well as teaching Sunday School. Bert was predeceased by his parents David and Julianna and brothers Frederick and Victor. He leaves to mourn his wife and very best friend of 58 years Frieda and son Garth (Carmen) of Saskatoon, sisters Lisa Reddekopp and Irene Dzeryk of Edmonton plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins from across Canada and the United States. A Service of Celebration will be held at 2 pm, Friday Sept 9, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lanigan SK with Pastor Randy Meissner of Saskatoon officiating. Arrangements entrusted to Fotheringham-McDougall Funeral Service of Watrous SK with interment in Lockwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be greatly appreciated for the Lockwood Cemetery Fund or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
