GILMORE, EDDIE HUBERT June 12, 1925- August 28, 2009 Eddie Hubert Gilmore of McCalla, Alabama, born June 12, 1925 to Eddie Henry and Grovie Franklin Gilmore, passed away Friday, August 28, 2009. He led an extremely fulfilling life first and foremost as a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather. He attended Alliance Elementary, Springdale Elementary, Jefferson County High School and Birmingham Southern College. In 1943, upon graduation from high school, he joined the U.S. Army and served in World War II until 1946 when he joined the Alabama National Guard. That same year he married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth Jackson. In 1951, he was called to active duty during the Korean Conflict and served in Germany. He retired from the Alabama National Guard in 1965 with the rank of Major. As a life-long business owner and entrepreneur, he was a mentor and example of integrity to many. As a steward of service, Eddie Hubert Gilmore served one term in the Alabama State House of Representatives from 1962 until 1966 and served three terms in the State Senate from 1966 until 1978. As a state senator, he served as Chairman of the Jefferson County Delegation in his second term, served on the Finance and Taxation Committee and also was appointed to the first Alabama Ethics Commission created by Governor Albert Brewer. He authored the legislation which created Tannehill State Park and later served as President of the Alabama Historic Ironworks Commission. His dedication to his local community included 55 years as a Mason (Past Master of Jefferson Valley No. 795 Lodge), a Shriner for 50 years, a fundraiser for the Boy Scouts of America and as trustee at McAdory High School. His leadership roles included Board positions on The Salvation Army Men’s Rehabilitation Center, the former First Western Bank, New Southland National Insurance Company and on the Advisory Board for UAB Medical West Hospital. His faithful and tireless support extended also to his church as a 36 year member of the First United Methodist Church of Bessemer where he served on the Board of Stewards and the Finance Committee. From 1990 until his death, he was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in McCalla and served as Chairman of the Building Committee for the Family Life Center (1991-93) and as Chairman of the Building Committee for the new Sanctuary (2003-04). Eddie Hubert is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 48 years, Elizabeth Jackson Gilmore, his parents and three siblings. He is survived by his wife of 5 years, Vaudine Smithson Harbarger Gilmore; his six children Randy Gilmore (Dale), Joanne Davis (Jim), Lea Chrisawn (Michael), Julie Howell, Elizabeth Roberts (Evan), and Jane Blythe (Phillip); his grandchildren Jay Gilmore (Jenny), Eddie Gilmore (Stacie), Rob Davis (Kimberly), Chuck Thornton (Amber), Warren Gilmore (Brandy), Gil Howell (Lindsey), Andrew Thornton, Emmie Howell, Owen Roberts, Molly Roberts and Eleanor Roberts; his great-grandchildren Trent Gilmore, Tanner Gilmore, Jackson Howell and Jamey Davis; his wife’s children Terry Harbarger, Cindy Cowley (Jerome); her grandchildren Joey Harbarger (Monica), Andrea Galvin (Dan), Courtney Patterson (Tim); her great-grandchildren Harrison Harbarger, Sarah Harbarger, Hunter Patterson, Drew Patterson and Sophie Galvin. The family wishes to thank Angel Emanuel of Hospice Compassus for her loving and compassionate care. Eddie Hubert Gilmore left a legacy of love, hope, joy, laughter and lots of hugs. His positive fighting spirit and “never give up” attitude will live on in the hearts of friends, family and acquaintances who were fortunate enough to have known him. For this remarkable man and his amazing life, we are forever grateful. He will be deeply missed. Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church will hold visitation with the family on Sunday, August 30th from 5:30 pm until 8:00 pm and funeral services on Monday, August 31st at 10:00 am. A eulogy will be given by Governor Albert Brewer. The Reverends Alan Head and Bobby Scales will be officiating. There will be a private family burial following the service.
