Harriett Helen Lehr Greeley, Colorado Obituary

Harriett Helen Lehr

Harriett Helen Hoffner Lehr was born in Gill, Colorado, on August 13, 1932, to Fred and Katie (Kaiser) Hoffner. She passed away on Sunday, March 19, at TRU Hospice of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado. Harriett attended Gill schools for twelve years and graduated from Gill High School in 1950. She lived on a farm, was a member of 4-H clubs, and was active in church and school activities. During high school, she was employed at S.H. Kress in Greeley. Following graduation, Harriett worked for Home Light and Power (now Xcel Energy). She married Robert John “Pete” Lehr on June 15, 1952, at St. Paul’s Congregational Church in Greeley. While her husband was in basic training in the United States Army, she joined him in 1952 at Fort Smith, Arkansas. She then joined him in 1954 while he completed his duty at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was a seasonal employee for Great Western Sugar Company for ten years. She also worked for the City of Greeley and Greeley National Bank. She retired in 1994 after working 18 years as a deputy clerk for Weld County Clerk and Recorder. Harriett enjoyed researching genealogy, and she compiled many books for the Hoffner, Lehr, and Kaiser families. She continued to update this information, noting each birth, marriage, and death, and she enjoyed the telephone calls and correspondence with family members. She also planned several family and class reunions. She was a member St. Paul’s Congregational Church, the Red Hat Society, and for almost sixty years, she enjoyed her time with dear friends in the Homemaker’s Club. She was an officer of the PTA at Franklin Elementary School, and she also served as a room mother for three years. Harriett loved being a grandmother, and she attended every church, school, and sports events possible. She kept a scrapbook for each grandchild, including newspaper clippings, programs, and photos of all their activities. Harriett and Pete enjoyed traveling, including trips to the Panama Canal, Canada, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. Their travels also included many trips to Walt Disney World to visit their granddaughter Jennifer. In earlier days, they enjoyed taking their two children to visit most of the United States on family vacations, and the itinerary always included attending ballgames at many professional ballparks. They were original season ticket holders for the Colorado Rockies. Most of all, Harriett loved her trips to Rocky Mountain National Park. Harriett’s family remembers her as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, “Sis”, and loyal friend. She never knew a stranger, and she will be missed more than words can say. Survivors include her husband Pete, daughter Jo Anne (Lonnie) Hilzer of Greeley, son John (Carol) Lehr of Eaton, and grandchildren Michelle Lehr of Salem, Oregon, Derek Lehr of Waldport, Oregon, Jennifer Hilzer of Burbank, California, Bryan Hilzer of Austin, Texas, Erin Gregory of Denver, and Marla (Chad) Holcomb of Hamilton, Montana, and great-grandchildren Emerson and Brooke Holcomb. She is also survived by two brothers, Donald Hoffner of Eaton, and Jerry Hoffner of Greeley, and sisters-in-law Alice M. Hoffner, Betty Hoffner, Alice Hoffner, Paulette Haggan, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers James, Robert, and Kenneth Hoffner. Harriett’s family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Grace Pointe for the loving care they provided for her, and for the care they will continue to give to our father. In appreciation, memorial donations may be given to the Grace Pointe Activity Fund, because they enjoyed many country bus rides, musical programs, themed events, restaurant outings, and even a trip to Coors Field to see the Rockies play last summer. These activities allowed Harriett and Pete to resume a life well lived following dad’s stroke. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 24 at St. Paul’s Congregational Church, 1525 43rd Avenue with a reception to follow. Interment 1:30 p.m. Friday at Linn Grove Cemetery. Friends may leave condolences at adamsoncares.com.
