James Leslie Penfold Jr., 93, of Greeley passed away peacefully at Grace Pointe on March 26, 2017 surrounded by family. He was born August 22, 1923 in Longmont, Colorado to James Leslie Penfold, Sr. and Dorothy Erickson Penfold. He was the oldest of three children. He grew up in Ft Lupton and graduated from Ft. Lupton High School. When World War II broke out, Jim joined the marines. He married Karmen “Kay” Jean Sauer of Ft. Lupton June 6, 1943 two days before leaving for the service. He was in the 4th Division. He served in California, Maui and Guam. Within the past few years he travelled on an honor flight to Washington, D.C. with other WWII veterans to visit the WWII Memorial. Jim worked in the Ft. Lupton Produce business, also for Great Western Sugar in Brighton, and road construction as a cement finisher of overpasses on I-25. He worked for Prudential Insurance for 24 years before retiring. He served as a volunteer fireman for 23 years. He travelled to all 50 states, as well as Mexico and Canada. He loved his family, sports, fishing, camping, travelling and playing games. He was a vocalist who sang at church and for many funerals. He played the piano and organ. Jim was a friendly person who was always ready to make a new friend. Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Kay, of Greeley, son Dr. Gordon (Beth) Penfold of Eaton, son Greg (Meredith) Penfold of Rock Springs, WY, and daughter-in-law Marian Penfold of Greeley, eight grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Rev. J.L. Penfold, his brother, Bud Penfold, his sister, Pat Richards and his parents.
