Gabriel Garfield "Gabe" Gayton, 78, of Walsenburg, died Monday, Mary 23, 2016 at the Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center ER. Gabe was born on April 6, 1938 in Del Carbon, CO. to Benito and Rose Gayton. He attended Walsenburg High School, graduating in 1957. Gabe was a veteran of the us Army, serving from 1960 to 1963. He was a licensed welder, methane certified, licensed handy man and a HVAC Journeyman. He had served as a City Administrator, Councilman and served on the Housing Board. Gabe started working for the City of Walsenburg on November 16, 1965 and retired, as the gas department supervisor on May 29, 2009 after 43 years of service. Gabe had a love for baseball and was a Little League coach. His other interests were gardening, fishing, the Denver Broncos, the Colorado Rockies, and of course, Coors, but most of all he loved helping others. Gabe is survived b his loving wife, Mary Lou, children, Carol (Joey) Pacheco, Walsenburg, Dennis (Collette) Gayton, Colorado Springs, Ron (Karen) Gayton, Pueblo, grandchildren, Jordan and Michael Barela, Danica Gayton, great grandchildren, Jayden and Gabriel Barela, brothers, Arthur (Theresa Gaytan, Jess "Chewy" (Ruth) Gayton, Denver, a sister, Rachael (Hank) Martinez, Kansas, numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Benito and Rose Gayton and a brother, Clovis Gayton. Services will be held on Friday, May 27, 2016 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Walsenburg. Rosary, 1:00 PM and Mass at 1:30 PM followed by burial at North St. Mary Cemetery with Military Ritual by the US Army Ritual Team and the Patriot Guard Riders.
