George Caffrey Obituary

Retired Meriden Police Chief, George John Caffrey, age 88, died on November 18, 2016 at Midstate Medical Center in Meriden surrounded by his family, two days following the death of his beloved wife of 60 years, Josephine Scalise Caffrey. George was the son of George Henry Caffrey and Mary Agnes Scanlon Caffrey and was a life-long resident of Meriden. He attended St. Rose School before enlisting in the Navy in 1945. George was stationed in several places from Texas to Morocco. He served eight years before being honorably discharged in 1953. When George returned to the states, he worked at the International Silver Company where he met his future wife, Josephine. George joined the Meriden Police Department in 1954. He gained praise as a rookie when he captured an escaped convict while working his beat. He worked his way up the ranks to Chief of Police and retired in 1986. While working as a cop, George went to college at night and managed to earn his Bachelors of Science degree and three Masters of Science degrees. He later went on to teach at the University of New Haven and Southern Connecticut State University. He retired from teaching when he was 82. George is survived by son, John Caffrey of Meriden CT, and daughter, Jessica O’Neal (Glenn) of Arlington, Virginia; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren; brothers, Carrol Caffrey (Jean) and Robert Caffrey (Mary Lou); sister Joan Stevens, sisters-in-law Caroline DeFrancesco and Mary Bernetti (Dominic), Henrietta Scalise; and numerous nieces, nephews and close friends. He was preceded in death by: sons; Timothy and Kevin Caffrey, and his sister Lois Caffrey. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at 9:15 am from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main Street, Meriden and at 10 am at Mount Carmel Church for a Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, November 21st from 4 to 7 pm.
