Leo Benedict Dungan a 50-year resident of Ellington, husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, died Friday, Mar. 24, 2017 at the age of 90. He passed away peacefully following a prolonged illness in the presence of family. Lovingly remembered by his family, Leo is predeceased by his devoted wife of 47 years, Isabelle, also of Ellington. He is survived by his son Leo Jr. and daughter-in-law Delia Dungan of Lumberton, N.J., his son Anthony and wife, Nan Meyer, currently residing in Rochester, N.Y. and his four grandsons, Sean, Benjamin, Myles, and Liam. Leo is also survived by his niece, Patricia (Havens) Hopkins of Newington and his nephew Charles McColgan of West Granby. Born Jan. 29, 1927, the son of William Thomas Dungan and Mary (Farrell) Dungan of Hartford, Leo brightened many lives with his musical talent and ready sense of humor. Leo enlisted in the U. S. Navy at a young age and actively served during WWII in Tokyo as a radioman and then aboard the destroyer escort U.S.S. Hughes. After serving, Leo graduated from Providence College with a degree in Engineering and worked for several decades as an engineer in Windsor, CT. He loved playing saxophone in local big bands and swing bands over the years, often volunteering to perform at senior centers or local restaurants. Leo's passion for playing and preserving 40s music was a lifelong pursuit. The family would like to thank the many other caregivers who lovingly assisted Leo in his final years at White Oaks Retirement Community in Manchester. Thank you Ella, Emilia, Patty, Maritza and Lucy. Leo's ability to overcome and the courage he displayed in the face of many illnesses were matched by his devotion to friends and family. Leo was a very special man and he will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him. Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family on Thursday, March 30, 2017 from 10am -12p.m. at the Burke-Fortin Funeral Home, 76 Prospect st, Rockville. A funeral home service will take place at 12:00 pm. Burial with full military honors will follow at Ellington Center Cemetery in Ellington.
