Alva James Obituary

On October 22, 2016, we lost the gentle soul that was Alva James. Though he was 80 years old, he led an active and vibrant life, and only passed away after a brief illness. Mr. James was born to Clara Pinnock and Phillip James, on January 5, 1936, in Barney Side - Westmoreland, Jamaica. He was one of three siblings. He grew up in Barney Side but he eventually moved to Montego Bay, Jamaica where he met his wife of over 46 years, Leonora James. After getting married and while working at Bayrock Hotel in Montego Bay for 16 years and Richmond Hill Hotel for another 14 years, Mr. James and his wife had the opportunity to open a local convenience and goods store in Paradise Norwood, Montego Bay. He not only took pride in his business, but also truly relished the friends he made during that time. After many successful years in business Mr. James and his wife closed the business and migrated to Florida to be closer to their family. Mr. James had a passion for boxing and horse racing, which he could watch for hours on end uninterrupted. He also loved sweets and desserts and would often be caught sneaking away with some at all family functions. However, both of these did not compare to the love that he had for the Lord and his family. Mr. James was a man of few words but when he spoke, there was always wisdom in whatever he had to say. He also had a unique sense of humor that sometimes only his close family would understand.A fervent believer in hard work and staying busy, Mr. James decided to return to the work force in 2004 with Wal-Mart where he worked diligently for the past 12-year tenure. He truly enjoyed working and impacting the lives of others and he was recognized throughout his tenure for his hard work and dedication. He leaves behind his wife, Leonora James; his son, Alva “Billy” James Jr.; his daughters, Cecilia James and Maxine Spence; four grandchildren, Matthew Banton, Omarley Spence, Shelbiann Spence, Marlen Spence, sister, Icelyn Scarlett, future great-grandson Clark “Cirilio” Banton, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
