James Scott Whitmer, born March 17, 1934, passed away on October 18, 2013.

James is survived by his loving wife Lynn; daughters Mary Ellen Thompson, Jamie Sue Whitmer, Jane Talbot; sons Robert Whitmer, Ted Whitmer, and their mother, Judith Whitmer; step-son Michael Van Buren; step-daughter Stacy Van Buren; grandchildren Mathew Mitchell, Andrew Mitchell, Joshua Mitchell, Abby Mitchell, Christopher Van Buren, Stephen Van Buren, David Van Buran, Jonathon Van Buren, Mark Van Buren, Sara Van Buren, Christopher Whitmer, Nicholas Whitmer, Bryan Whitmer Curtis Whitmer, Grace Thompson, Julia Thompson and great-grandchildren Alex and Colton Whitmer. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary Whitmer and his sister, Jane Fister.

Born in Northumberland, PA, James was a graduate of Mansfield College in Mansfield, PA. James was a teacher and coach at Flagler Palm Coast High School, prior to his years at FPC he taught civics at Athens High School, Athens, PA, where he also was the head football coach, leading the team to consecutive league championships during a brief but stellar coaching tenure. James was also elected mayor of Athens, PA, was a volunteer fireman, and a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Athens, PA. James was a competitive runner, canoeist, and long-distance bicyclist, making several trips of more than 1,000 miles.

Memorial services will be help on October 23, 2013, at 2:00 pm at Calvary Christian Center in the chapel with Pastor James Raley officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in James’ memory to the National Parkinson Foundation; Gift Processing Center, PO Box 5018 Hagerstown, MD 21741-5018.
