Clyde Barnes Obituary

Clyde Marcus Barnes, 82, of Hastings, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, February 20, 2017 at the Bailey Center for Caring in St. Augustine following an extended illness. A native and lifelong resident of Hastings, Clyde was the owner and operator of Barnes Farms and Barnes Fertilizer in Hastings. A very caring and kind man, Clyde gave of his time and blessings to the Rodeheaver Boys Ranch where he had served on the Board of Directors and was the recipient of the Wagon Master Award. He had also served on the nominating board with Farm Credit and was an early member of Chem-Nut, Inc. (a chemical sales company based in Albany, GA). Clyde was likewise a long-time active member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Hastings. He enjoyed traveling and loved spending time at his second home in Linville Falls, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Hardy Barnes and Edna Ronie Register Barnes, 2 brothers, James W. Barnes and Clellan Barnes and a sister, Virginia Barnes Driggers. Clyde is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nancy B. Barnes of Hastings, 2 daughters, Catherine Anne Chalkey of Keystone Heights and Janet Barnes DeVane (Mark) of Quitman, GA, 2 sons, Marcus Edward Barnes (Anne) of Hastings and Dale Lester Barnes (Robin) of Hastings, a sister, Edna Lawton of Palatka, 13 grandchildren, Randy Zipperer (Joanie), Michael Zipperer, Crystal Hilton (Scott), Sara Zipperer-Taylor (John), Lindsay Oglesby (Jimmy), Ben Chalkey, Jennifer DeVane, Justin DeVane (Jordan), Virginia Barnes (Silas King), Christopher Barnes (Heather), James Barnes (Rebekah), Dixie Mericle (John), D.L. Barnes (Julie) and Allison Hidalgo and 29 great-grandchildren. Services celebrating Clyde’s life will be at 10:00 A.M. Friday, February 24, 2017 at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Hastings with Pastor Taylor Hodges and Rev. Asa Greear officiating. Burial will follow at Palatka Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:30 – 7:30 P.M. at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka.
