Mary Saxby Palatka, Florida Obituary

Mary Saxby

Mary Edyth “Edye” Saxby, 78, of East Palatka, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Haven Hospice Roberts Care center after an extended illness. Edye was born at home in East Palatka in 1938. Being wife and mother led her from Palatka to Virginia, Ohio and Several Florida cities, including Miami and Lake City. Working with Jerry to support their family, Edye was employed most recently at Flowers Bakery in St. Augustine and with American Greetings, serving the Palatka area. Edye also advocated for the less fortunate children of Putnam County, as a Guardian Ad Litem. She was a very active member of the Palatka Red Hat Chapter holding positions of responsibility such as secretary and treasurer. Edye reveled in Red Hat activities, making many friends; entertaining and delighting her Red Hat sisters with her quick wit and ample sense of (twisted) humor. (She was fondly known as “The High Priestess of The Church of Painful Truth.”) The proud wife, mother and grandmother of five military veterans, Eyde was a very active supporter of local and national political groups. Those who knew her had no doubt of her strong sense of patriotism and lover of our country. She is preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Jerome Saxby, parents, W.D. Wall of Little River, SC and Pearl Edyth Tear Wall of Glade Springs, sister, Darthula May Wall Summerlin and brother, Thomas Miller Wall. She is survived by her children, Edgar Stephen Saxby, Kevin Daryl Saxby (Stephanie), Teresa Cheryl Saxby Blackburn (Tom), Linda Stephanie Saxby Crane (Tim), grandchildren, Christopher Edgar Saxby, Jeffery Stephen Saxby, Donna Dale Bacon, Shawn Theodore Blackburn and Mitchell Allen Blackburn, great-grandchildren, Cassie Leigh Salva, Kaden Mavrick Blackburn, Avaya Skye Blackburn and great-great-granddaughter, Cai Savala. The family would like to recognize, with deep appreciation, the ICU staff at Putnam Community Hospital and the staff of Haven Hospice, for the wonderful care and compassion for Edye, her family and friends. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Bro. Melvin Hall officiating. Memorial gifts, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center, 6400 St. Johns Ave., Palatka, FL 32177. Memories and condolences may be expressed to the family at Edye’s Book of Memories page at www.johnsonoverturffunerals.com . Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka.
