Shirley P. Jernigan passed away into God’s eternal grace on Thursday, December 22, 2016. She was born on November 4, 1931. She lived in Palatka and was mostly known as Shirley P. Shirley retired from the Florida Highway Patrol after complications from surgery in 1992. She started in the Driver’s License Department and her devout loyalty to the FHP ended serving as Troop G Secretary to Troop Commanders, Capt. Hodges and Maj. Sigmon. She bled brown and black and was nominated several times for FHP Employee of the Year. She enjoyed fishing and friends and laughing. Shirley was genuinely kind to all and loyal, always putting others before herself to the end. She was the last living member to a generation of the Philips family of Palatka. She was a model of independence after her surgery and lived alone with her pet dogs on the river in the southern historical society of Palatka for many years. Shirley was the epitome of bravery and never gave up and enjoyed her life and boys. She is loved and will be missed immensely by all. She is survived by her children, Ralph Jernigan, Paul Jernigan, Jr., and Clay Jernigan and grandsons, Aaron Jernigan and Tyler Blair. Services will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Jerry Bedenbaugh officiating. Burial will follow at Westview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 pm on Monday, December 26, 2016 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Rodeheaver Boys Ranch, 380 Boys Ranch Rd., Palatka, FL 32177.
