Webster Chapman “Web” Merwin, 64, of Palatka, passed away on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 in Crete, Greece while on a cruise with family members. A native of Ancon in the Panama Canal Zone, Web resided in Palatka since 1968. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee. Web owned and operated Merwin Insurance Center since 1980. He was a member of the Azalea City Kiwanis Club and in years past, was involved with the Jaycees where he assisted with the Azalea Festival for many years. Web also served as a member of the Board of Directors with the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce Board from 1999-2002. In 2002, he was recognized by the Putnam County School Readiness Coalition for his leadership and dedication to helping ensure early care and education for young children in our area. Web had attended the First Baptist Church of Palatka and enjoyed time spent teaching a Sunday school class along with his wife Jeanne. When he wasn’t spending time with his grandkids, Web could often be found on the golf course as a member of the Hastings Golf Group. Twice over his years on the golf course, Web scored a hole-in-one. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Chapman Merwin and Barbara Jane Merwin. Web is survived by his wife of 36 years, Jeanne Tyre Merwin of Palatka, his children, Kyle Dresback (Aletha) of Jacksonville, Heather Barnes (Christopher) of Hastings and Daniel Merwin of Palatka, a sister, Helen Logue (Richard) of Marietta, GA and 6 grandchildren, Christopher Barnes, Colby Barnes, Sadie Anne Barnes, Chloe Dresback, Emma Dresback and Sarah Dresback. The family will receive friends Friday, December 2, 2016 at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka from 10:00 A.M until 12:00 Noon. A private family service will take place at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be sent to Boy Scout Troop #62, of which Web had served as assistant scout master, c/o St. James United Methodist Church, 400 Reid St., Palatka, FL 32177.
