Lyle William Papendick, 98, a resident of Red Bluff, Calif., died at 7:57 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011, at the home of his son, Rolland. His sons, Rolland and Bill, and their wives were present when he passed peacefully in his sleep.
He was born on Oct. 18, 1912, in Hoopole, Ill., to Louis and Myrtle Papendick, and married Jean Coomber on June 30, 1940, in Freeport.
Preceding him in death were Jean, after 51 years of marriage; his second wife, Mary Steiner; and his third wife, Helen Decker.
He is survived by three sons, David of Wheaton; Rolland of Red Bluff; and William of San Rafael, Calif..; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Lyle earned his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1936. He worked at Northwestern Steel and Wire, Lindburg Engineering Company, Masonite Company, and S.C. Bartlett Company where he was president and C.E.O. until he sold the company in 1984. Mr. Papendick was a member of Limestone Presbyterian Church and later Forest Hill Methodist Church in Peoria.
He was a Scottish Rite Mason more than 60 years, a member of the Order of Eastern Star for 68 years, was Worthy Grand Patron for the State of Illinois in 1981-82, and was a member of Blackhawk York Rite College No. 88. His answer to a successful life was to take care of yourself with proper diet and daily exercise, and get a good education.
A private family service will be held Friday, Jan. 21, at Oakland Cemetery in Freeport.
