Thomas Simon, PhD

Thomas Paul Simon, PhD, of Bloomington, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, July 16th, 2016 at the age of 57. Born February 22nd, 1959 in Mount Clemens, Michigan, he was the son of Thomas Paul Simon and Marcella Bernice (Kloock) Simon. Thomas is survived by his wife of 35 years, Marybeth Simon, sons, Thomas Paul Simon IV, Cameron Simon, and Zachary Simon, daughter, Lia Simon, all of Bloomington; mother, Marcella Simon of Harrison Township, MI; sisters, Lisa Farnsworth of Clinton Township, MI, Carla Price (Edward) of McComb, MI, and Marcella Gerardi (Antonio) of Chesterfield, MI; brother-in-law Robert Groszek (Lisa) of Munster, IN; sister-in-law- Susan Groszek of Indio, CA, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father. Thomas was a man of many talents and skills, but above all he was a family man who loved spending time with his wife and children. He was an active member of Genesis Church in Bloomington. Thomas’ faith in Jesus was the focus of his life and everything he did and the person he was flowed from his relationship with the Lord. He had rich personality and a wonderful sense of humor. Thomas earned his BS in 1981 from the University of Michigan. He earned his MS in 1985 from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and his PhD in 1994 from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Thomas loved fish and was an Ichthyologist, and had over 35 years of experience working with complex environmental ecosystem issues evaluating anthropogenic impacts on aquatic assemblages. His experience included 25 years of government service, including field and project management of investigations for U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Thomas had over 25 years of teaching experience from a variety of college and university systems in Indiana, including Purdue University, Indiana State, Ivy Tech Bloomington, and Indiana University Bloomington, where he was Adjunct Professor at SPEA. He was also a professor at American Public University System, and formerly a lecturer at Stone Laboratory at Ohio State. Thomas authored 16 books and had over 370 professional publications. Thomas loved many sports, and was an avid lacrosse player. At the University of Michigan he was an All-American lacrosse player and still holds a scoring record there. He also played semi-pro lacrosse in Canada as a member of the U.S. Team. He was a former basketball coach at the Banneker Center and at Upwards and a former lacrosse coach for the Bloomington Outlaws Girls Lacrosse Team. Visitation for Thomas will be held from 1-2pm Wednesday, July 20th, 2016 at Genesis Church, 801 E. State Road 45/46 Bypass, in Bloomington. Funeral Services will be held at 2pm Wednesday with Pastor David Woodcock officiating. Burial will follow at Clear Creek Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Thomas’ memory may be made to his family in care of The Funeral Chapel.
