Timothy C Mayne

Timothy C. Mayne, 67, of Asbury, Iowa, answered an urgent call in the field on Wednesday December 28, 2016. It was the sort of call you can’t refuse…a call to a better place from which he will not be returning. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 2, 2017 at the Church of the Resurrection. Military Honors will be conducted by the Dubuque Marine Corps League following Mass at the Church of Resurrection. Friends may call from 1:30- 4:30 p.m., Sunday at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Road where a memorial prayer service will begin at 4:00 p.m. Timothy came into this world with work boots laced up on August 4, 1949, the first child of Clarence Arthur and Mary Ellen (Hohnecker) Mayne of Dubuque, IA. Tim finished High School in 1967 where he spent most of his school years chasing Vergene Thayer’s “sweet tush” around Dubuque Senior. From there, the U.S. government snagged HIS sweet tush for four years of service on a Navy supply ship during Vietnam. Once out of the Navy, Tim married Vergene in the spring of 1971. Ever the hard worker, Tim made many a friend and shared countless fond memories in his 34 years at Peoples Natural Gas in Dubuque, 7 years at Iowa Pipeline out of Sioux Falls SD, and a 4 year stint making cabinets in Cloquet, MN. Tim eased into retirement by working part-time for years helping his son build a custom concrete business. Tim was always the go-to-guy, the man-with-a-plan, and sporting a perm while always getting it done! Whether being first into a blazing Menards building to shut the 3” gas main down before explosion, or the last one out of a 10’ deep muddy hole on a rainy call night. He loved the large project, high-energy gas piping days. When Tim wasn’t busting his butt at work he was helping anyone and everyone with their home projects. Building decks, finishing basements, hanging sheetrock, soldering pipes, painting or rewiring (often reworking previous electrical attempts). Tim would be there with all his tools, early and ready to work. He was always helping and teaching others with his diverse construction skills learned from his grandfather, uncles, and the few high school classes where he actually paid attention. Down time and relaxation to Tim meant spending weekends camping with brothers & sisters, swimming in the backyard pool, and agitating pretty much anyone in range. Whether cramming his 7’ tall boys into a 1984 Ford tempo for a gas-and-go-only speed drive to Florida, cutting grass in work boots and shorts, watching the grandkids figure out quickly that Grandpa Tim’s IOU held little value in a “rigged” royal rummy game, or mispronouncing half of the words in the English language while storytelling - Tim was never short of a good red faced laugh. Tim is survived by many loving family, friends and co-workers who will forever remember his hearty laugh and helping hand.
