George “Whitey” McKenna, 89 of Solomon passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2017 in Abilene. He was born November 12, 1927 in North Vassalboro, Maine, the son of George Sr. and Laura (Higgins) McKenna. George joined the Air Force in 1947. He was honorably discharged in 1950. He was united in marriage to Thrissa Johnson on June 26, 1949 at the Schilling Air Force base in Salina, Kansas. She preceded him in death September 6, 1996. After serving in the Air Force, he returned home to Solomon where he lived out his adult life. He was member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Solomon, the American Legion and the Abilene Bowling League. George is survived by two daughters, Ann Bush and husband Kenny of Solomon and Mary Warhurst and husband Will of Salina and two sons, Roger McKenna and wife Kate of Arkansas and Bill McKenna and wife Toni of Bennington. 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren and a special friend Judy McKenna. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Thrissa, one brother and a grandson. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 A.M., Saturday, February 25, 2017 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Solomon with Father John Wolesky as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Prairie Mound Cemetery in Solomon. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6-8 at Carlson-Becker Funeral Home in Solomon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial be given to the Alcohol Anonymous Foundation. Memorials may be dropped off or mailed to Carlson-Becker Funeral Home, PO Box 308 Solomon, Kansas.
