Bessie “Alice” (McKenzie) Smart, 97, of Atchison Kansas passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at the Atchison Medicalodge. Alice was a fun-loving wife, sister, mom, grandma, aunt, and friend to many. Funeral services will be 11:00 am on Saturday, Nov. 12th, 2016 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev Russ Cooper, Pastor of the First Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am Saturday until time of service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Christian Church or to Atchison Medicalodge and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Bessie “Alice” McKenzie was born on Aug. 23, 1919, in Eureka, Kansas the daughter of William “POP” and Katherine (Doering) McKenzie. She was a social butterfly who enjoyed life to the fullest and loved competing in softball, bowling, golf, bingo and playing cards. She was raised on a farm in Eureka, Kansas. Following graduating from Tonavay High School, she attended Kansas State Teacher’s College in Emporia, Kansas. She met her husband, Melvin Smart, in college and they were later married in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas on April 1, 1939. Together, they raised their three boys in Atchison, Kansas where she attended and worked as the Secretary for the First Christian Church and Reverend Harold Roberts. She retired in 1978 and moved to Medina Lake in Lakehills, Texas where she was an active member of Lakehills United Methodist Church and the surrounding community. Mrs. Smart moved back to Atchison, Kansas, in 2002 to be closer to her family and friends. She was a member of the First Christian Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, Friendship Class and an avid San Antonio Spurs fan, and enjoyed all sports. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband, son (Roy Arthur), and 10 siblings. Survivors include sons, Kenneth (Susan) Smart of Atchison, Kansas and Gary (Ginny) Smart of Austin, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
