Evan Jay. Taylor, 94, of Atchison KS died Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at Providence Place, Kansas City, KS. Graveside services and burial will be 2:30 pm on Saturday, Nov. 26th, 2016 at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until time of graveside service at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to U.S.D. 409 Back-pack Buddy Program and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com. Evan J. Taylor was born on Aug. 15, 1922 in Boone, IA the son of Evan and Grace (Parrish) Taylor. He graduated from Boone High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Evan served in World War II, and the Korean Conflict and retired as a Major after 25 years of service. He was involved with military intelligence while in the service. Mr. Taylor received a Master Degree in Government /Economics from Iowa Teachers college known now as University of Northern Iowa and received a minor in Psychology from the University of Missouri. He met Mary E. Golinvaux while in college, they were married on Oct 23, 1946 in Waterloo, IA. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1966 and moved to Atchison where he became a Professor and Administrator for Benedictine College. Following his employment from Benedictine he taught as U.S.D. 409 School District, and several other schools. Evan was a member of the American Legion Post # 6, and the V.F.W. Post # 1175, both of Atchison, KS and Atchison Rotary Club. He was the head of the American Red Cross in Atchison and was an active reader, learner, coin collector, story teller and enjoyed playing poker with a local poker club. Survivors include a son, Matthew (Vallie) Taylor, Sunset, S.C., sister Mary Jane Echternach, Chicago, IL, a granddaughter raised like a daughter, Amy Scherer, Atchison KS, nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. His parents, wife-Mary, three sons, Evan, John, and David Taylor, two daughters, Marie Kulp, and Gracie Scherer preceded him in death.
