Grant Smith

Grant Smith, 89, of Colby, passed away Sunday, October 16, 2016, at Citizens Medical Center, Colby. He was born on February 13, 1927, in Utica, KS, to Carl and Ethel (Jacka) Smith. He attended school in Ransom, KS, where he excelled in and loved sports. He proudly served his country in the Armed Forces during World War II. Grant then returned to his hometown to marry the love of his life, Verda J. Marhofer, on August 28th, 1948, in Hoisington, KS. In 1951, Grant and Verda made Colby their home. Grant had a true love for the Colby community, especially his friends and neighbors. He became a Blue Cross Blue Shield Representative in 1962 and proudly worked for the organization until he retired in 1989. Grant was a member of the Masons, the United Presbyterian Church and a dedicated member of the “16th Street Club.” He was an avid golfer and loved the sport. Grant golfed whenever and wherever possible. He had many friends through golf and may have won a little money off of them over the years. He also enjoyed blackjack, bridge, pitch and gin. Grant was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He had the love of his family, the adoration of his friends and the respect of his colleagues. He will be dearly, dearly missed. Grant was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Audrey J., Laura, Gertrude and Pauline and brother Logan. He adored his wife, Verda; his daughters, Mary and Margaret and their respective families, son-in-law, Randy and grandson Dason and son-in-law Terry and granddaughter Abbie. He lived to see his grandson become a successful property manager and his granddaughter become the first member of the family to be inducted into the National Honor Society. Cremation was selected and friends may offer condolences to the family from 4-7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. A private family inurnment will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Citizens Medical Center, Inc. or Hospice Services, Inc. in care of Baalmann Mortuary, PO Box 391, Colby, KS 67748.
