Margaret Filbert Obituary

Margaret Gillespie Filbert passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2017, after a long illness. The oldest daughter of Joseph and Edna Gillespie, she was born in Washington’s Crossing, PA. Dr. Filbert married her beloved husband, William O. Filbert, in January, 1948, and they raised their two sons at Spring Hill Quarters in Ellicott City, MD. She worked for the federal government as a scientist for approximately 60 years, conducting research and publishing articles while at Edgewood Arsenal. As part of her responsibilities there, she traveled the world to speak about their work, serving as a mentor and role model to many. Dr. Filbert earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and her doctorate from UMBC. Gardening was her passion, especially at her home, and her beautiful gardens and historic home were well-known. Dr. Filbert earned the designation of Master Gardener. She also enjoyed gourmet cooking, playing bridge, and entertaining family and friends. She was devoted to her dog and companion Dustin, who often accompanied her on her daily errands. Dr. Filbert was predeceased by her parents, her husband William, her sister Alice, and her dear grandson Tristan. She is survived by her sons William, Jr. (Teresa) and Conrad (Lisa), her sister Helen, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Visitation will be on Sunday, February 19, 2017, from 3:00 – 6:00 PM at Slack Funeral Home, P.A., 3871 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City, MD 21043. Interment will be private. A memorial service will be held in the spring, a time of year enjoyed by Dr. Filbert when her gardens were in full bloom. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in Dr. Filbert’s memory to NORD: National Organization for Rare Disorders (https://rarediseases.org/) or the Patapsco Female Institute of Historic Ellicott City, P.O. Box 293 Ellicott City, MD 21041.
