Mary Ann Elizabeth Wells, of Somerville, MA died in the early morning of Wednesday the 21st of December at her home. She was born on Wednesday, August 13th, 1952 in Norwich, NY to Anthony “Duke” Cologero Spano and Mary Famalaro Spano. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Philip Wells; daughter Laura and her husband Al Conti of Winchester; son David Wells of Somerville; two cherished grandchildren Nathan and Kathryn Conti; sister Anne Marie and her husband Jim Shepherd of Dover, DE; nephew Jake Shepherd; brother-in-law Wesley Wells of Vernon, CT; sister-in-law Cindy Ambler of Zephyr Hills, Florida; and nieces and nephews, Elizabeth Gentzen, Bob Scheele and Chris Herschlein. She is predeceased by her parents Duke and Mary, and Aunt Josephine Famalaro all of Norwich, NY; and baby Jacob Daniel. Mary Ann graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Manhattanville College (NY) and achieved her Master’s degree from Boston College. She was a long time resident of Somerville, where she was a joyful neighbor and spent many years teaching English and Drama to grades 4-12 at the Waldorf School in Lexington and Belmont. She was a devout Catholic, a true lover and friend to all, a die-hard Red Sox fan, and found joy in many aspects in life especially those of nature and arts, such as the moon and stars, biking on Nantucket, music, poems, and plays. She was so kind to her family, both immediate and distant, and was a mentor and second mother to numerous students, including foreign exchange students who she welcomed into her home year after year. The visitation hours are from 3-7pm on Thursday, December 22nd at Devito Funeral Home, Watertown, MA. The funeral service will follow the next day at St. Catherine’s Parish, Somerville at 11:30am. Please go directly to church. Fr. Tom Rossi and Fr. Paul Helfrich will officiate the service. Burial to follow at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, MA. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in memory of Mary Ann Wells to support cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O.
