October 22, 1927 – March 28, 2012

Bertram “Bert” W. Thomas, 84, husband of the late Dorothy Q. (Whitaker) Thomas, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage, died Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at Ledgewood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Beverly. Born in Salem, he is son of the late Chester G. and Ruth (Chennell) Thomas.

Bert grew up in Salem and attended Salem Schools. He served in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1947. For many years he was employed as a machinist for Reid Brothers, later known as Post Machinery in Beverly. While working, he traveled all over North America, Europe and Japan. Bert enjoyed gardening, antiques and fishing. He also loved woodworking and fixing things.

Surviving him are four sons: Mark Thomas of Danvers, Gary Thomas and his wife Mary of Beverly, Brian Thomas and his significant other Ginny Ouellette of Salem and Wayne Thomas and his wife Chris of Beverly; two daughters: Christine Young of Salem and Wendy Thomas and her fiancé Jack Harrington of Marshfield; one brother: William Thomas and his wife Dorothy of Salem; seven grandchildren: Wendy Alphen, Travis Thomas, Tanya Thomas, Sarah Thomas, Amy Thomas, Steven Thomas and Alex Thomas; three great grandchildren: Tyler Alphen, Christa Stewart and T.J. Nicolau; daughter-in-law: Lisa Thomas of Beverly He is predeceased by his son Eric G. Thomas and his siblings: Virginia Taglieri, Eileen Christensen, Evelyn George, Ann Nagle and Elmer Thomas.

A Funeral Service will be held at the Harmony Grove Cemetery Chapel, 30 Grove Street, Salem on Saturday at 1:00 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held at the Campbell-Lee, Moody Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly (North Beverly Location) on Friday from 4 to 7 P.M.
