Obituary
Dorothy Nilson Peterson, age 101, of Tinton Falls, died Tuesday, November 22, 2016, at home. Dorothy was born in Brooklyn NY in 1915. Her family moved to Long Branch in 1919; she graduated from Long Branch High School and Newark Normal School (now Kean University). Dot taught 1st grade in the Long Branch school system before marrying Harold “Skeets” Peterson, the love of her life, in 1939. The young couple eventually settled in Monmouth Beach where they raised their six children. They moved to Kensington Court (now Arbor Terrace of Shrewsbury), where she resided at the time of her death, surrounded by her family. Thanks to the staff for taking such good care of her. Mom cherished her time with her family and friends, making everyone feel welcome in our home. Laughter, love, games, and food were always being served up at 11 Navesink. Dorothy was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Long Branch, serving as Trustee, Administrative Council member, president of the Women’s Society, and member of the Bell Choir, throughout her 90-year membership. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Monmouth Beach and the Monmouth Beach Library Association. Dorothy is predeceased by her husband Harold, daughter Janet Moser and son-in-law Harry “Skip” Mottola. Surviving are her children: Nancy DuCasse (Robert) of Arlington, TX; Judy Martinelly of Shrewsbury, Barbara Peterson of Shrewsbury Twp., Harold Peterson (Barb) of Malvern, PA; and Marjorie Mottola of Neptune; her grandchildren: Jennifer Stanley, Julie Stover, Paul DuCasse, Jeff DuCasse, Michelle Masonius, Amanda Martinelly, Betsy Martinelly, Shannon Carroll, Greg Peterson, Mindy Peterson and Rev. Peter Mottola; 21 great-grandchildren; and a multitude of nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call on Monday, November 28, 2016 at the Damiano Funeral Home, 191 Franklin Ave. in Long Branch from 3–6 pm. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 29 at 11 am at the Asbury United Methodist Church, 61 Atlantic Ave. in Long Branch with interment following at Glenwood Cemetery, West Long Branch. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Asbury United Methodist Church, 61 Atlantic Ave., Long Branch, NJ 07740 or to a charity of your choice.
