Rev. Steven Robert Mamchak, Jr.

Rev. Steven Robert Mamchak, Jr., 77, died peacefully at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch on December 5, 2016. Born in Elizabeth, NJ, he was a lifelong resident of Eastern Monmouth County, finally residing in West Long Branch. His life was full and varied. He retired from Middletown Township’s Thompson Middle School where he taught 7th Grade English, Drama and Media for 35 years receiving recognition as the school’s recipient of the Governor’s Teacher of the Year. A prolific writer, he co-authored, with his wife, 20 books dealing with Education. Then, he co-authored with Russ Scalzo, a Christian trilogy set in the End Times. Finally, he turned his individual talents to suspense fiction and poetry, authoring 7 more books. His first love, however, was always the theater. Acting and directing more than 200 plays, he founded The GoodFoot Players, a drama troupe performing throughout NJ with a home at 1st Assembly of God in Shrewsbury. Ever active in community affairs, Steven co-founded Ezekiel’s Wheels of Long Branch [EWLB], a salvaged food distribution network serving seniors and the working poor. This successful outreach has provided some 150,000 pounds of food to over 60,000 tables over the past 6 years. When not preaching and teaching Steven was an amateur/semi-professional magician, a member of Ring 123, a holder of the Order of Merlin [indicating 50 years of membership in the International Brotherhood of Magicians] and a collector of all things magic. Steven is preceded in death by his father, Steven, and his mother, Mildred, beloved friends Dolly, Andy, Barbara and Patrick; he had no siblings. He leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Susan, dear fellow members of the Greater Long Branch Ministrerium and brothers/sisters in Christ. He was granted his last request when his remains were accepted by Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Ever the teacher, Steven wished to further the education of future doctors. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 10am at 1st Assembly of God, 220 Sycamore Ave., Shrewsbury, NJ 07702.
