John Carney Northfield, New Jersey Obituary

John Carney

Carney, John Patrick, 80, of Northfield, NJ for 47 years and formerly of Olde Northfield, Birmingham, England died on Friday, February 24th after a courageous battle with MDS. He was privately educated at the Leighton House School and St. Edwards School in Birmingham, England. In 1956 he entered the British Army and became a Medic, and a member of the Elite Parachute Regiment and Airborne Forces. In addition to fighting the Egyptian army over the nationalization of the Suez Canal, he discharged in 1958 as the Army Diving and Boxing Champion. In 1959 he joined the Bournemouth Water Show. The marketing material pictured all the cast members of the show, which included the divers as the main attraction as well as the unknown musical band members of “The Beatles”. In 1960 he sailed to America to become a feature performer doing high dives and comedy acts at The Steel Pier in Atlantic City. In addition to performing, John was the pool manager at the Sheraton Deauville. During the winter season he would work as the pool manager at Bal-Harbor Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida performing multiple times a day for hotel guests. Over the years, he performed at Six Flags Great Adventure, in addition to shows in Canada, Cuba, South Africa and China. In 1976, he became world champion of the ABC Wide World of Sports sponsored Acapulco Cliff Diving Championships with the great Jim McKay as commentator. That same year he was invited to be inducted into the International Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. When casinos arrived in Atlantic City in 1977, he worked at Caesars and Tropicana for 15 years ending as a floor supervisor. He owned and operated Carney’s Pool Service until retiring in 2002. One of his greatest passions throughout his life was his faith. A devout, dedicated disciple of the Catholic faith, his belief never wavered even after life's many blows. As a daily communicant at St. Bernadette's Church of Northfield, he served on the parish council and taught CCD for many years. He garnered his spiritual strength through the life and teachings of Saint Padre Pio. In the later years of his life he was honored to have a soul partner in Florence Straubmuller, of Linwood NJ. She was a true treasure and companion sharing his journey with close family and friends. John loved Johnny Cash, western movies and America. Although he never became a U.S. citizen, he truly believed he was an American. He is predeceased by his beloved daughter, Laura; and his brothers, Andrew and Stanley. He is survived by his two sisters, Peggy (Ken) Hunt, and Vina (Robert) Tedcastle; his sister-in-law, Brenda Carney; his children Matthew (Lori) of Northfield and John (Taylor) of Haddonfield; his four grandchildren: Chelsea Laura, John Paul (JP), Andrew Michael, and Ryan Matthew; and his soul partner, Florence Straubmuller. A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 4th from 9:30am until 11:00am at St. Gianna Beretta Molla Parish, 1421 New Road, Northfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am.
