McDermott, Sharon (nee O’Connell) 60, of Linwood, NJ and Saratoga Springs, NY, passed away at home surrounded by her family on Saturday, March 4, 2017. Sharon was born in Saratoga Springs, NY to Jack and Helen O’Connell. She graduated from Mercyhurst College with a degree in Education. While at college, Sharon met Joe, and they were married on July 7, 1979. Sharon was born to be a teacher, and taught in Philadelphia, PA, Schuylerville, NY and Northfield, NJ. When her children were young, she also taught Sunday school at Our Lady of Sorrows in Linwood. Sharon had a passion for books that she instilled in her children and her students. She loved the beach, the race track in Saratoga Springs, and family vacations. In the past year Sharon got to hold two beautiful grandchildren that added eternal joy in her heart and the best smile that you could ever imagine. Sharon is survived by her husband and best friend of 38 years, Joe; her children, Elizabeth (Robert) Kuhfuss and Colin (Amy) McDermott; grandchildren Allison Kuhfuss and Jack McDermott; sisters Kathryn (Jeff) Palmer and Sandy Hannam; father-in-law Connie McDermott; two brother-in-laws; two sister-in-laws; many nieces and nephews; and an angel by the name of Naana Robertson. She was predeceased by her parents, Helen and Jack O’Connell, Maud O’Connell; sister Kelly VanAlstine; and her mother-in-law, Dorothea McDermott. A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, March 8th at 11:00am at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 724 Maple Avenue, Linwood NJ. A visitation will be held from 10:00am until the time of mass.
