Taggart, William Sr., 93, of Galloway Twp, formally of Pleasantville and Egg Harbor Twp, passed away on November 11, 2016, to be with the Lord on Veterans Day in the presence of Shirl, Bill, and Wanda at home, after a lengthy illness. In the months preceding his passing, he enjoyed life and became more of a buddy then a father and it was a special time for all. William was born in Pleasantville to Mary and Joseph Taggart. Dad was an altar boy and was educated at St. Peters R.C. Church in Pleasantville. He was the oldest boy and second of 11 children. Being Irish Catholic, he helped support his family until enlisting in the US Army during World War II. Dad served in the Army in the 83rd Infantry and 83rd Reconnaissance Group. He was a member and instructor at Fort Meade of Superior Officers in Combat Techniques, and was part of the Normandy Invasion until being severely wounded by machine gun fire three miles from the US stop line outside Berlin, Germany. William was awarded a Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He elevated to the rank of Lieutenant, and was offered the rank of Captain to reenlist, but he decided to stay near his family and left the service permanently disabled. After the war, dad became a Union Carpenter and worked full time for the Atlantic City Race Course and Fabi Construction. He loved the outdoors, golf, hunting, gardening, fishing, boating, and family. William was predeceased by wife of 70 years, Ruth (Leeds); brothers, Vince Taggart, Jack Taggart, and Charles Taggart; and sisters, Ann Barrett and Mary Groves. He is survived by his brothers, Gerald Taggart (Vera), and Joseph Taggart; sisters, Alice Jones, Joan Bird (Harvey), and Genevieve Dinger; daughter, Shirl Moeller (Richard); son, William Taggart Jr. (Wanda); three grandchildren, Richard Moeller, Jr. Holly Slusarz (Mike), and Nathaniel Taggart (Lauren); four great-grandchildren, Ruth (12), Emily (8), Bryce (5), and Cole (2); and fifth great-grandchild from the Philippines is expected soon. Services will be private and at a later date. William and his wife will be interred together at the Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery in Estell Manor.
