Eliseo Chavez Obituary

Eliseo L. Chavez, age 83, born and raised in Belen, NM, passed away on Sunday February 15, 2009 at home surrounded by his family. Eliseo served honorably in the US Navy aboard the USS New Jersey. He is a veteran of World War II. After his enlisted service, he was employed by Sandia National Laboratories and worked in Laser Research, and was employed for over 40 years as an Electrical Engineer. During his employment at Sandia Laboratory he applied for 52 patents and was granted all 52. A life long member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church, he served proudly with the Knights of Columbus and achieved the position of Grand Knight. Mr. Chavez is preceded in death by his first wife of 50 years, Virginia R. Chavez, his stepson, Felix Milan and brothers, Celedon, George, and Alfredo Chavez and one sister, Mary Ann Hunter. He is survived by his wife, Alicia; one daughter, Joyce Quintana; one stepdaughter, Claudia Milan and three sons, Martin, Andrew, Michael Chavez and two brothers, Johnny and Felix Chavez. He is also survived by his 19 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and many family and friends. Eliseo had many hobbies, 2 of his most important were researching his family genealogy and being a licensed Hamm radio operator. He started the clubs which now exist in Belen and Socorro NM. A father, a husband, a grandfather and great grandfather, friend and mentor to many, he was loved and admired by all who knew him and his presence will truly be missed. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at 5:30 PM in the chapel of Riverside Funeral Home of Belen, 418 W. Reinken Ave., followed by the Most Holy Rosary at 6:00 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 9:00 AM at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church with Father Stephen Schultz officiating. Inurnment with military honors will follow in the church cemetery and a reception will follow at the Knights of Columbus. An online guest register is available at www.riversideofbelen.com
