Maria Elba C de Baca, 91, a resident of Mineral Hill, NM, passed away at her residence
Sunday following a prolonged illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Florencio and Juanita CdeBaca; sisters Mary Gutierrez and husband Joe, Angela Greenier and husband Robert, Florencia Brito and husband Henry; brothers Severo CdeBaca, Manuel CdeBaca and wife Mary, Gonzalo CdeBaca and wife Nan; nephews Michael Greenier, Tony Gutierrez, Walter Brito, Martin Brito, Mary Jo Brito, and Maria Pace.
She is survived by her sister, Carmen C. Pace of Las Vegas; nieces: Sharon Carelton, Linda St. Angelo, Dolores Mills, Pricilla Reynolds, Camille Brito, Mary Angela Brito, Peggy Gray, Robert Vasquez, Sonia Sandoval, Gisele Greenier, Janet CdeBaca, Nadine Silva; nephews, Howard Pace, Don Pace, Rick Pace, Charles Pace, Jose Gonzalo Gutierrez, Angelo Greenier, Henry Brito, Tom Brito, Jim Brito, Peter Brito, Rober CdeBaca, Manuel CdeBaca, Albert CdeBaca, and Frank CdeBaca.
The daughter of the late Florencio and Juanita Gallegos CdeBaca, she was born on September 14, 1918 in Las Vegas, NM. Elba’s ancestors date back to the earliest settlers in New Mexico. Of 12 plus generations, she can count Luis CdeVaca from Toledo, Spain in the 1500's, Jose Gallegos from Parral, Nueve Viscya, New Spain in the 1600's and Diego De Vera from Tenerife, Canary Islands in the 1600's as great, great grandfathers. Elba has written 18 books containing stories handed down from her mother Juanita and grandmother Guadalupe Baca Gallegos. In addition she has contributed to the Genealogy Record of the family of Tomas Dolores Cabeza de Vaca. Elba was a teacher, spending most of her career in rural schools. She retired form Cubero, NM where the majority of her students were Native American children.
A lifelong Catholic she was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis. All services will be held from Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas, NM with a rosary on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Father Larry Brito of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Taos, NM will celebrate the Mass. The interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
