Richard Potter

South Glens Falls Richard F. Potter Sr., 75, a lifelong resident of South Glens Falls passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 10, 2012, at his home. Born on April 12, 1937 in South Glens Falls, he was the son of the late Edward H. and Marion B. (Rivers) Potter Sr. Dick grew up in South Glens Falls and graduated from South Glens Falls High School in 1956. In 1961, he graduated from Albany Business College and attended Castleton State Teachers College. In high school, Dick was a three sport athlete. He played basketball at Albany Business College and Castleton State. Dick also played Semi-Pro Basketball for The Massie’s Olympics for a few years. On February 16, 1963, Dick married Susan Malan at St Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church in Hudson Falls. Dick worked for the Village of South Glens Falls as the Building Inspector. After his retirement in 1993, he worked as a crossing guard for 16 years at the Harrison Ave School. He was past President of South Glens Falls Little League, organized and ran both Moreau Men’s Softball League and Pool League at Moreau Community Center, was a member of South High Hall of Fame Committee, and was part of the NY State High School Basketball Committee as the Hospitality Chairman. Dick was proud of his community and his class of 1956, in which he helped plan many of their class reunions. Dick enjoyed cooking, crossword puzzles, family game nights, walking two miles every day (before his illness), and any sports. He was an avid NY Rangers, NY Giants, and NY Yankees fan. Dick loved spending time with family and friends. He never missed an event his children and grandchildren were involved in. He was a communicant of St. Michael The Archangel Church in South Glens Falls where he was an usher. Besides his parents, Dick is predeceased by his two brothers, Edward Potter Jr. and Jack Potter, and his mother and father in-law, Kathryn and John Malan. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 49 years, Susan M. Potter, children, Richard F. Potter Jr., Kevin P. Potter and his wife Sonja all of South Glens Falls, Timothy J. Potter and his Fiancé, Michele Seddon of Brunswick, Kathryn J. Potter of South Glens Falls, Patrick M. Potter of Easthampton, MA, grandchildren, Jaklynn, Brad, Rebecca, Alec, Lauren, Mykenzie, Sydney, Brittany, Jack, and Noah, five great-grandchildren, sister in-laws, Helen Potter and Rosemarie Potter, two sisters, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dick is also survived by his sheep dog Lucy. Friends may call from 4-7pm on Monday May 14, 2012 at M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home 136 Main Street, South Glens Falls, NY 12803.
