They were recognized for their glass bottle milk, ice cream, eggnog, chocolate milk, a family restaurant and 3 drive-in dairy stores. His drive-in concept was the original convenient store/drive thru decades before their time. The drive-ins were promoted with the tag line “Come as you are, shop from your car.” An active community volunteer, he was involved in numerous organizations including: The Fredonia Rotary Club, where he was recognized for 46 years of perfect attendance and awarded the club’s first Paul Harris Fellow; he was a member of the Fredonia School District Board of Education at the time of the planning for the existing High School/ Middle/Elementary buildings; a Pomfret Town Councilman, a member of the Fredonia Chamber of Commerce, Pomfret Zoning Board, Fredonia Boosters, the Civil Air Patrol and an original member of the Fredonia Farm Festival Committee. Besides his parents, Leonard is predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Gertrude (Lesch), who died in 2012 and an infant sister Lucille. He is survived by five sons: Scott (Larisa) of Fredonia and their daughter Julia; Doug (Colleen) of Cassadaga and their daughters Elizabeth & Sarah and son Burton (Sarah); Craig (Laurel) of Fredonia, and their sons Mark (Shannon), Dan (Lindsay), Ben (Amy), Nathan & Stephen; Seth (Kathy) of Tully, NY and their son Zach and daughters Lily & Hannah; and Brian (Ann) of Dunkirk and their daughters Kelsey, Lindsey, Sydney, and Gabrielle; and six great grandchildren.
