Velma L. “Auntie” Hilsdorf, 82, of 24 Old Almond Rd., passed away Thursday (December 31, 2009) at her home.

Born in Hornell, June 28, 1927, the daughter of Marlin and Cecile A. Johnson Greenfield, she had resided in Hornell all her life. She was a graduate of Hornell High School in the Class of 1946 and had provided a day care center out of her home for several years. She was known by many in the community as “Auntie” and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Canisteo American Legion Post, enjoyed visiting the casinos with her friends, and especially loved her family. She also enjoyed hosting gatherings of friends and family, particularly the annual tradition of the Hilsdorf Christmas Eve Party. Forever a caring and giving mother, Velma had been active in the Foster Parents Program for many years.

Her brother, Henry Greenfield, passed away the same day as Velma. She was predeceased by her parents and 2 sisters, Doris Button and Edith Smith.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Charles Hilsdorf whom she married in 1947, 4 daughters, Carol (Greg) Miller of Holly, Diane (Richard) Butler of Hornell, Tina (Joe) Paddock of Henrietta, and Dr. Jackie (Walter) Nichols of Washington DC, her son, Ronald (Barbara) Hilsdorf of Hornell, 12 Grandchildren; Sara Hilsdorf, Rian Hilsdorf, Andrea (Randy) Smith, Amanda Butler, Jaide Paddock, Saige Paddock, Evan Miller, Lucas Miller, Cori Miller, Garrett Miller, Yasmin Miller and Chelsey Consiglio, 3 Great Grandchildren, Conrad Meyer, Haylee Smith and Gavin McNerney. Also survived by Alan Reitnauer and many others who knew her as “Auntie”.

The family will be present to receive friends at the Bender - Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell on Tuesday from 11 AM until 1 PM. Funeral services will follow calling hours at 1 PM with Rev. Dudley Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in Hornell Rural Cemetery.
