Theresa Thompson Jamaica, New York Obituary

Theresa Thompson

Theresa Diane Thompson was born on July 24, 1960 at Queens General Hospital in Queens, New York. Theresa was the fourth child born to the union of Bertha and the late John W. Thompson. Theresa was educated in the New York City school system. In her later years Theresa studied hard and became a medical billing specialist for New York Presbyterian Hospital. She enjoyed her work and recently enrolled in Hudson Valley College to upgrade her skills so as to become more proficient and reenter the field of medical billing. Reesie, as she was affectionately known, grew up in Crown Heights and South Jamaica, with a loving and affectionate personality that was evident to all who met her. Growing up, Reesie enjoyed fun at Rockaway Beach, riding the roller coaster and driving the bumper cars. Nothing made her laugh more than bumping her siblings around the course. She had an infectious laugh. She was always ready for a challenging game of handball and a few rounds of skating at the famous Empire Rollerdome in Brooklyn. Reesie had a tremendous love for music and art that carried through her entire life, you could always find crayons and coloring books in her home. Reesie attended Joy Church Deeper Life Christian Fellowship under the pastorate of the late Rev. Marilyn Crown, where she accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. Later she changed her membership to Christian Life Center under the pastorate of the Rev. Dr. Alphonso Bernard, Sr. Theresa valued her relationship with the Lord and would often say, ‘”I don’t care what anybody says, I know that my Father God loves me.” In 1977, Reesie was blessed with the birth of Michael Anthony, the first of her four children. Subsequently, she was blessed with the births of Glenn Junior and her twins, Eric Monroe and Erica Monique. Her children were her life and her greatest love. She was blessed to watch them blossom into strong, beautiful and accomplished adults. Reesie was motivated by an overwhelming love for her children and discovered ways to make them each feel uniquely and specially loved. Evidence of her love was the pictures and photo albums that filled her home. Reesie loved her entire family and shared a very special connection with her “running buddies” and sisters Barbara and Kathleen. It brought her much joy to share her love with all of her family. It was clear that she had an undying love for her friend and mother whom she simply called Ma. Reesie savored any occasion to gather with her dear mother, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and siblings to cook, eat and laugh. She was especially known for “throwing together” her delicious peach cobbler and could often be seen delightedly feasting on crab legs and sipping on piña coladas. Like many of us, Reesie had both the best of times and the most challenging of times. Those who knew and loved her learned to never count her out because after every challenge, you could always count on her to persevere; with a smile that nobody could resist and a laugh that was always so warm and wholehearted. She would make others laugh even when they didn’t want to. She was resilient, feisty, spirited and humble. On November 15, 2016, Reesie exchanged her earthly address for a heavenly one. It is clear to us, her family, that Reesie did not leave home, she went home! The Father has prepared a place for her and we will see her again. Reesie leaves to cherish her memories her loving and devoted mother: Bertha Thompson; one loving and devoted daughter: Erica Street; three loving sons: Michael Thompson, Glenn Thompson and Eric Thompson; one brother: James Thompson; three sisters: Rev. Florine Thompson, Kathleen Thompson-Starks and Barbara Thompson-Nwobi; three grandsons: Shemarr Thompson, Michael Thompson and Robert Thompson; one uncle: Robert Green; one son-in-law: Jeremy Street; two brothers-in-law: Bernard Starks and Anthony Nwobi; one sister-in-law: Marie; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins; and devoted friends.
