Mario Menghini Kings Park, New York Obituary

Mario Menghini

Mario Menghini, aged 86, of Commack, New York, passed away the morning of May 4, 2016, at St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center in Smithtown, New York. There will be a funeral mass for Mario on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Church in Commack. Calling hours and services will held at Clayton's Funeral Home, Kings Park on May 5th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and May 6th from 2:00 to 4:30, and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Mario was born on December 14, 1929 in Oriolo, Italy to the late Augusto and Lucia (DeSantos) Menghini. He came to the United States when he was an infant. When Mario was 13-years-old his father passed away unexpectedly. From that point on he began working to support his family, first as an usher at the Brooklyn Paramount Theater where his love of movies was born. He served in the Army in Korea from 1951-1953. After graduating from college, he worked in advertising. He eventually changed careers and worked in the medical insurance industry. In 2002, he retired from the Medical Society of the State of New York after fifteen year rising to the position of Executive Director for Socio-Medical Economics. Mario was a talented writer, artist and photographer. He was a self-described "Showbug" who compiled his own list of the top 100 movies of all time. Topping his list was the 1952 musical "Singing in the Rain". He also had a great appreciation of music, especially the big band sound of the 1940s. He was an avid sports fan, rooting for the New York Mets, New York Giants and New York Rangers through thick and thin. People were awed by his remarkable ability to recite, in order, every Academy Award winning movie and World Series winner (and loser) since the 1920’s. He was also famous for his sweet tooth. He literally and figuratively lived “La Dolce Vita”. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rita and his two daughters: Jean Menghini of Babylon, NY, and Donna Hearle of Pelham, NY; a sister, Mary Dembeck of Westport, CT; son-in law Matthew and two grandchildren, Catherine and Ian Hearle, whom he adored. Mario is predeceased by his parents, Augusto and Lucia, and a brother, Ernesto Menghini. He will forever be in our hearts and minds, and will be remembered as being a true gentleman. He loved us all dearly and we will always love him, husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, and friend.
