Joyce C. Hutchins Obituary

MASSENA – Mrs. Joyce C. Hutchins, 91, of 8 North Allen Street, peacefully passed away Sunday morning, January 8, 2017 at the St. Regis Nursing Home, after a brief illness.


Joyce was born October 24, 1925 in Keene, New Hampshire, the daughter of the late Lawrence B. and Florence Baker Cline. She graduated from Massena Central School in 193 and later took secretarial courses Rochester Business School. On October 18, 1947, Joyce married Robert E. Hutchins at the Advent Christian Church with Rev. Alfred Young, officiating. Bob predeceased her on November 25, 2007.


Joyce first worked in the office W.L. Smith Hardware before starting Massena Memorial Hospital, where she was a transcriptionist in the radiology department from 1944-1952. In 1953, he went to work for Dr. Clough as a secretary until 1960. In 1963, she went back to the hospital, continuing there until her retirement in 1982. After her retirement, she and her late husband enjoyed traveling, having visiting all the continental 48 states. Joyce was a lifelong and active member of the Advent Christian, now Northside Community Church, where she sang in the choir and was President of the Mission Society, Secretary/Treasurer on the church board and Sunday School teacher for many years. She also was the Secretary/Treasurer of the New York State Advent Christian Conference. She cherished the time she spent with her family and found great pleasure and comfort in reading.


Joyce is survived by her children, Stephen and Leslie Hutchins of Alhambra, CA; Richard and Peg Hutchins of Wilmore, KY; Beth and Kenneth Kells of Massena; and Judy and Bruce Olson of Eaton, CO; her grandchildren, Paul, Bradley, Amy, Matthew, Amanda, Emily, Peter, Stacy, Sally, and Kenneth; 9 great grandchildren; her brothers, Ronald L. and Marilyn Cline of Plaistow, NH and Lawrence Cline of Barrington, NH; and many nieces and nephews.


In addition to her parents and her husband, Joyce was predeceased by a brother, Willis Cline on May 11, 1990.


Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, Friday 4-7:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held Saturday 11:00 AM at the Northside Community Church with Pastor George Middleton, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Massena Center Cemetery.


In lieu of flowers, Joyce’s request was to have donations directed to the Northside Community Church Mission Fund.
