Lucille M. Ackerman Obituary

MASSENA – Ms. Lucille Marie Ackerman, affectionately known as “Lucy” to many, 81, peacefully passed away Sunday morning, November 20, 2016 at the St. Regis Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since January.


Lucy was born June 3, 1935 in Potsdam, the daughter of Harold J. and Marion L. Monroe Ackerman. She attended Lost Nation Grammar School and graduated from Massena High School in 1954. She also took courses in Nurses’ Aide Training.


On October 1, 1955, Lucy started her career as a seamstress for Cornell’s Laundry and Dry Cleaning in Massena, working there for 60 years until her retirement in December 2015. She deeply cherished the memories, conversations, and friendships she made throughout those 60 years. In addition to sewing, Lucy enjoyed crafting, antiquing, gardening, and going to garage sales and flea markets.


Lucy is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Bonnie Ackerman of Massena; two sisters-in-law, Keitha Ackerman of Massena and Ruth Ackerman Amos of Adams; her beloved nieces and nephews, Debbie and John Dumas, Barbara Rachette, Kurt Ackerman, Karen and Bill Jawan, Dorothy Jeffery, Danny and Angie Ackerman, Scott Ackerman, Kevin and Tina Ackerman and Kent and Renee Ackerman; and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.


In addition to her parents, Lucy was predeceased by an infant sister, Barbara in January 1932 and two brothers, James M. Ackerman on June 18, 1986 and Edgar P. Ackerman on July 11, 2007.


Friends may call Tuesday 2-4 and 6-9 PM and Wednesday 10-12:00 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where funeral services will be held Wednesday at 12:00 NOON. Burial will follow in Winthrop Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest with her parents.


Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.
