MASSENA – Funeral Services for Roger B. Clough, 69, of 225 East Hatfield Street, Massena will be held Thursday, January 5, at 12:00 PM at the Church of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Donald J. Manfred, celebrating. Burial with full military honors will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Massena. Friends may call Wednesday, January 4 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Donaldson Funeral Home, 100 N. Main St. Massena where members of the AMVETS and American Legion will meet at 7:00 PM, followed by the members of the Elks Lodge at 7:15 PM for their respective tributes. Mr. Clough passed peacefully from this life on January 1, 2012 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Eunice G. (Thompson) Clough who passed May 27, 2005. Roger was born on August 17, 1942, the son of Bertrand L. Clough and Rayona J. Besaw. Roger graduated from Massena Central School in 1961. After graduating, he joined the United States Army and did his basic training at Fort Knox and then was stationed in Germany from 1961 until 1964. He served in the 42nd Transportation Unit on a US Army Helicopter as a Machine Gunnery; he left the military in 1964. He returned to Massena and married his high school sweetheart, Eunice G. Thompson in August of 1964. After his military service, Roger gained employment with the New York Power Authority. Roger became a “Hot Stick Lineman” in 1968 traveling across the state with his line crew and climbing the 765 lines, mentoring many linemen to craft the skill of “high voltage” lineman. He was the leader on the linemen crew and leader for the IBEW-International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 2032 for pioneering the “Hot Stick Lineman” protocol. In 1978, he was elected as the IBEW Local 2032 President and then elected as the IBEW Local 2032 Business Agent in 1983 and served as the IBEW Local 2032 Business Agent until his retirement in 2008. As the IBEW Business Agent, he worked hard for his constituents. He was a champion for labor and was a leader for the union man. He was a loyal supporter for his union brothers and sisters. During his term as the IBEW Business Agent he accomplished many goals and served on many national and state committees. He was the IBEW International Vice President Representative for the New York State Electrical Association, a delegate to the New York State AFL-CIO, and also a delegate to the New York State Electrical workshop. Roger was a leader for the (IBEW) International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and was so until the end. Upon Roger’s retirement, the New York Power Authority named the 765 substation in Massena in his name; “The Roger B. Clough Transmission Maintenance Facility”, located on the South Racquette River Road. This will forever be in remembrance of his work as a “Hot Stick Lineman”, and service as the Local 2032 IBEW Business Manager. Roger was also co-owner of the Springs Inn, Massena, with Giz Thomas for 25 years. The sold the business after 25 years of a solid partnership and successful business venture. They worked hard promoting and making the Springs Inn a successful partnership. They were not only business friends, but true friends who helped each other through the good times and the bad. Roger was also a chartered member of the AMVETS Post #4 in Massena. Upon returning from serving in the US Army, Roger was instrumental in getting the AMVETS started in Massena along with many of his veteran friends. He was also a member of the American Legion #79 and the Massena Elks Lodge #1702 Roger is survived by his wife, Rose (O’Brien) Clough who he married June 1, 2010. His three children, Hidy (Clough) Van Winkle of Massena, her husband Daniel, and their children, Daniel and Diane; Molly Clough-Firnstein of Massena, her husband Eric, and their children Jake and Meghan; Roger B. Clough II of Massena, his wife Robin (Graveline) and their children, McKenzie and Owen. He is also survived by his three sisters, Carol Degon and her husband Dick of Massena; Nancy Shuster and her husband Jo of Calabash, North Carolina; Melody Deshaies of Massena; and one brother, Peter Clough and his wife, Sue of Watertown; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Bertrand L. Clough on April 28, 1978 and his mother, Rayona J. Clough on January 21, 2010. Roger’s pride and joy was his three children, Hidy, Molly, and Roger. He was very proud of all their accomplishments. He knew he could leave this world with a sense of accomplishment for his children. He loved spending time with his six grandchildren ad was always the first one to make sure they had anything they wanted. He loved their visits and the time he had with them. He loved to travel and he visited 48 states during his time on this earth. He was a devoted family man and father. His family always came first. Roger took pleasure in going to breakfast each morning with the “Boys” at the Via Main and enjoyed doing his radio show each week on WYGB “What’s Happening”. His nickname to many was “Big Buck”. He earned this name as a child growing up in the Massena Springs, and the nickname stayed with him until he left this earth. He was a true leader in many ways, helping individuals, going the extra mile for his family and friends, and being the first person there if you needed something. He was a true inspiration to many people. He helped many people during his journey through life. He left his mark in Massena, the North Country, and New York State.
