Minister Lynwood Cox

Brother Lynwood "Pa Pa" Cox was born on August 1, 1937, to the late Reverend Leroy and Christa Bell Cox(Wall) in Rockingham, North Carolina. He was the 12th child, youngest son, of 14 children. While working on the family farm, he was educated in the Richmond County Schools, and graduated from Monroe Avenue High School in Rockingham, NC in 1957. Later in that year, he moved to Rochester, NY, where he was then employed by the University of Rochester until he was drafted in the US Army in December 1960 and served until November 1962 as a Staff Sergeant. Lynwood met Flossie M. Pitts and married in 1960. From their union, produced 3 daughters, Christal, Christine, and Karen. They were married for 48 years until her death in July 2008.  Lynwood was employed with Eastman Kodak Company from 1964 until retirement in 1988 as a Quality Control Inspector. Not quite ready to retire, Lynwood gained employment with the Rochester City School District where he was the Parent Liaison at School 29.  In this role, he visited students homes for parental meetings, hosted numerous parent breakfasts, luncheons, and various after school activities. He served on numerous committees throughout the City of Rochester, NY, including the Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, and D.A.C.T. Lynwood accepted the Lord at an early age. As be began his adult Christian walk, he was a founding member of Community Bible Church where he served in various capacities, including Church Clerk, Trustee, Sunday School Teacher, Choir member, and Usher.  He served on the Executive Board for Rochester Youth for Christ. During this time, he earned a Associates Degree in Christian Education through Rochester Institute of Christian Education (R.I.C.E). On his Christian walk, he began service at Graves Memorial, formerly Graves Institutional, under Rev. Madeline Porter, Rev. Robert Byrd, Rev. Andre Williamson, and Rev. Rita Cunningham.  He was a licensed Local Preacher, and in this role, he preached the gospel, served as a Worship Leader, Sunday School teacher, Steward, and Choir Member. He further continued his education with certifications in Computer Programming and Small Business Administration received through R.I.T and Monroe Community College. Lynwood and Flossie were best known for always welcoming any and everyone, of all walks of life into their home for good food and great fellowship. Lynwood entered into rest on Friday, February 17, 2017 at 7:35 am in his home. Lynwood leaves to cherish and to continue his legacy: His daughters, Christal Cox (Maurice Bailey) , Rochester, NY, Christine (Carvin) Blocker, Winchester, VA,  and Karen Cox (Steven Ippolito) of Rochester, NY. 6 grandchildren, James(Amber) Blocker of Capon Bridge, WV, Jason Cox (Novrelette Brown), Brenson Blocker (Harahn Charles) Danielle, Kristin, and Brandon Blocker (Chrysley Charles), all of Winchester, VA. 16 great grandchildren, all of Winchester, VA, one surviving sister, Bernice Scott (Randolph Byrd) of Silver Spring, MD, sister-in-law, Anna (Rogers) Boston of Dublin, GA, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and dear friends. Visitation Friday 2pm-4pm & 7pm-9pm at the funeral home 109 West Avenue. Funeral service Saturday 11am in the chapel. Interment Private.
