Gloria Barr Horn, 89, of Ashland, passed away early Wednesday morning, November 16, 2016 at her residence in Ashland. Gloria was born August 30, 1927 in Ashland to the late Raymond Sheller and Peggy Ellen (nee Woodworth) Barr. She was a graduate of Ashland High School class of 1945 and had attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh where she studied Advertising Illustrations. She had formerly worked at the Faultless Rubber Company in Ashland and had been a telephone operator in Ashland and also in Los Angeles, California where she had lived for a short time. Following the births of her daughters, she began a career as a mother and homemaker. Gloria was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ashland and following her marriage to her husband, Lowell I. Horn, the couple eventually settled in Stow, Ohio where they were founding members of the First United Methodist Church of Stow, Ohio. She was also a member of the Stow Women’s Club, was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader and had been a volunteer at her daughter’s elementary school. Gloria and her husband, Lowell, were card partners and enjoyed playing Bridge and Duplicate Bridge. She also enjoyed gardening, baking, sewing, collecting antique furniture and furniture refinishing, family genealogy and history, drawing, painting and picture framing. On March 24, 1951 Gloria was married to Lowell I. Horn at the First United Methodist Church in Ashland. The couple were married for 65 years before her husband passed away on October 12, 2016. She is survived by two daughters, Hilary Anne (Stuart) Ratner of Detroit, MI; Elizabeth E. “Liz” (George) Horacek of Fairview Park, OH; a sister, Marilee “Molly” Evans of Ft. Worth, TX’ and a brother, James (Gretchen) Fluke of Dublin, OH. She was preceded in death by her parents her loving husband Lowell I. Horn and her granddaughter, Gena Ellen Ratner in 2002. A Memorial service will be held Monday November 21, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home with the Rev. Janet Chilcote officiating. Burial will be in the Ashland Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Kresge Eye Institute, 4717 St. Antoine St., Detroit, MI. 48201.
