DAVID SLATER Obituary

David Slater transitioned peacefully to heaven on December 25, 2016 after a brief illness. David was born in Washington, KY on March 21, 1928, the youngest child of seven children, to the late Chester and Bessie Slater. He resided there until he went to serve his country during the Korean War in the Army where he received a purple heart for bravery. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Maysville, Ky where he worked as a laborer at Brownings Warehouse. David desired a better life for his family so he moved to Columbus where he was employed by Western Electric for 30 years. David always worked hard to provide for his family.


David was united in holy matrimony to Martha Charlotta Lang. This union was blessed with five children, Charles Michael, David Earnest, Lynnita Charlett, Sheryl Marlene, and Darla Jean. They were married for 61 years.


Although David had limited schooling, he was very educated and knowledgeable about world events He was an avid reader and kept current with world events by reading the paper daily and watching political news. Coming from segregation, David understood that education would provide a better future for his children and encouraged them to seek educational opportunities at all levels.


David’s truly had a loving, gentle spirit. His love was exemplified through his legacy of love for his family and friends. David loved to fish and was an avid sports fan. He was knowledgeable in all sports. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and his ability to tell a great story.


David is preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Bessie Slater, his siblings, Thelma Slater, Raymond Slater, Leander Slater, Robert Slater, Wilbert Slater, Bettie Bea Warner, and grandson, David E. Slater, Jr.


He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife Martha C. Slater, sons, Michael Slater, David Slater, daughters, Lynnita (Benjamin) Scott, Darla Slater of Columbus, Oh and Sheryl (Philip) Seabrook of Indianapolis, IN


Grandchildren; Shawn Slater, Charles Slater, Jordan Seabrook, Ryan Slater and Akilah Seabrook. Great grandchildren, Trevonne Jarrett Slater, Julian Ransom, Amani Seabrook, Easten Dysart and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends and special daughter-in-law, Lishelle Wesley.


Our family is grateful, thankful and abundantly BLESSED for David’s 88 years on this earth. The world was a better place because of his presence. He will be missed.
