Youngstown - There will be a 10 a.m. funeral service on Friday Jan. 27, 2017 at Third Baptist Church, 1125 Park Hill Dr. in Youngstown, with the Rev. Morris Lee and the Rev. Hubert D. Clardy Jr. celebrating the life of Ted Everett Sr., 63, who passed away Thursday Jan. 19, 2017, at Northside Medical Center. Ted was born March 31, 1953, in South Hampton County, Va., the son of Ted Thomas and Iena Virginia Everett. Ted worked for Youngstown Steel Door for several years, before becoming a Youngstown firefighter on May 5, 1982. He was promoted to engineer on Jan. 1, 1986, then promoted to Captain on June 6, 1996. He then retired on August 29, 2008. Ted was involved in many aspects during his career to public service, he was a Mahoning County Reserve Deputy Sheriff, from 1979 until 1985. He was a member of the Mahoning County Hazmat team, joining in 1986. He became the chief of the Mahoning County Hazmat Agency in 1992, and was very instrumental in setting up mandates for training on the federal level involving terrorism, weapons of mass destruction and overseeing the formal and professional training as specified by the federal government. He oversaw the specifications and purchase of a new main response vehicle, and having the team being verified by the State of Ohio as a level 2 Hazmat team for local, regional, state and national response. He also worked with Mahoning County Hazmat advisory board and commissioners to solidify a permanent funding source for the team. Chief Everett celebrated 30 years as a team member and was the only remaining original member still on the team. He served as a leader, mentor and friend in his community. He was involved with numerous fire and police departments, as well as various E.M.S. agencies. His proudest moments were the promotions of all firefighters under his command to become officers. His main goals and objectives were to serve the community, both on and off the job. Ted was a 1971 graduate of the Rayen School. He also graduated from the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy, and the Youngstown Fire Department Fire Academy. He was a member of the I.A.F.F., the Y.P.F.F. Local 312, P.F.I.A., and was one of the founders and president for 10 years of the Youngstown Association of Black Professional Firefighters. He was also a member of the Mixed Company Motorcycle Club. Ted’s wishes were to thank several individuals that he thought of as family in his life. His mentors and friends, Jesse Carter, Marcia E. Harris, Clark Jones, Chip Comstock, and Silverio Caggiano. Ted will always be lovingly remembered by his 2 children, son, Ted Jr., of Youngstown, and daughter, Talia, and her mother Amelia Rogel of Orlando; niece, Ja’Chole Toney, of Youngstown, whom he helped raise; sister, Ruth Mathis of Los Angeles; 2 brothers, Larry Bruce of TN., and Byron Rutland Sr. of Toledo; grandchildren, Jordin, Javon, and Jylaia Everett; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Ted was preceded in death by his wife, Sharyl Frasier Everett, whom he married Oct. 9, 2008, and passed away on Feb. 10, 2011; and his sister, Juanita Freeman. Family and friends may call on Thursday, Jan. 26. 2017 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Rossi Brothers and Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Avenue in Boardman.
