Marvin Hughes Obituary

Marvin William “Bill” Hughes, 80, of Bellefonte, passed away Friday, December 9, 2016 at Hershey Medical Center. Born on November 17, 1936, in Bellefonte, he was the son of the late Charles L. and Ruth (Hoover) Hughes. On June 10, 1961, he married Nancy (Taylor) Hughes, who survives in Bellefonte. Bill was a 1954 graduate of Bellefonte Area High School, then enlisted in the United States Navy from July 23, 1954 until November 2, 1962. While attending Williamsport Technical Institute under the GI Bill for Veterans, he specialized in the field of electronics and graduated in 1958. He retired in 1991 from Penn State University Office of Physical Plant as head of preventative maintenance. He was secretary treasurer of Bellefonte Elks for 20 years. Bill was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Bellefonte, an honorary life member of BPOE # 1094, one of ten members to achieve this honor in the past 100 years., Bellefonte American Legion Post # 33, Bellefonte Moose Lodge # 206, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 1600, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and Undine Fire Company # 2. He cherished his granddaughters, and he loved watching his youngest granddaughter Kaitlyn dance in recitals and competitions. Bill enjoyed his new Cadillac, going to hunting and fishing camp, and spending time with his family and many friends. He oversaw maintenance clean-up at Union Cemetery in Bellefonte. Because of his service in the United States Navy, Bill loved his country. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Ruth Ann Heitzenrater (Donald) of Garrettsville, OH, Kathie Hughes Alterio of Bellefonte, by one son, William Charles “Bill” Hughes (Diane) of Bellefonte, and by three grandchildren: Erika Lyn and Heather Nicole Hughes, and Kaitlyn Leigh Alterio. He was preceded in death by one sister, Lorraine Ruth Hughes. There will be a public visitation held on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 from 6:00 pm 8:00 pm, followed by an Elks Memorial Service performed by the Past Exalted Rulers Association, at Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc., 206 N. Spring Street, Bellefonte, and Thursday from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at 11:00 am at the funeral home with Pastor Will Osman officiating.
