Jane Harris Obituary

Jane M. Harris of Northfield Drive, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania died on Tuesday, December 6, 2016. Born in Waterbury, Connecticut on April 12, 1926, she was the daughter of Robert Morrison and Grace Ethel McBride. A graduate of Meriden Hospital School of Nursing in 1947, she did obstetrical, gerontological, and neonatal nursing in hospitals in Connecticut and the U.S. Army Hospital in West Berlin, Germany and Virginia. For 15 years prior to her retirement, she was employed as Head Nurse in the Internal Medicine Group in Reston, Virginia. In 1982 she received certification as a Gerontological Nurse by the American Nurse’s Association. She is listed as a Cadet Nurse in the Women’s Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. An accomplished singer, she sang with a number of church choirs, the Yale Choral Group, the Berlin Studio Choir in Berlin, Germany, the Penn National Harmony Singers, the Meadowlarks in Chambersburg and also the Mercersburg Community Chorus. Jane sang in the Central Presbyterian Church, of which she is a member, for a number of years. She participated in the activities of the church with the sick and the shut-ins. Besides singing and her family, her many interests included tennis, golf, gardening, travel, Oriental Brush Painting, and gourmet cooking. She was dearly loved by all who knew her. During her husband’s 25 years of service in the U.S. Foreign Service, she accompanied him to foreign postings in Glasgow, Scotland; Hamburg, Bremen and West Berlin, Germany; Tel Aviv, Israel; and Djakarta, Indonesia. She became fluent in German and also was conversant in French, Hebrew, and Bahasa Indonesian. Jane and her husband, Donald Harris, were married on Christmas Day 1947 in Newburgh, New York. She is survived by her husband and their three children: Maureen (Hiro) Uyama of Herndon, VIrginia, Dirck (Jane) Harris of Annandale, Virginia,and Jeanne Wardlaw of Herndon, Virginia; three grandchildren: Brian McCracken, Jane Wardlaw and Erin Wardlaw; and two sisters: Roberta Berglund and Eunice Johnston of Cheshire, Connecticut. Her sister June Andrews predeceased her. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 17, 2016, at the Central Presbyterian Church, 40 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania 17201. Reverend Scott Bowerman will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the church at the above address.
