Obituary
Jack C. Shope, 87, of Hummelstown, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 26, 2016, at his home after a long illness. Born in Harrisburg on December 14, 1928, he was the son of the late Chester Scott and Ruth Marie Clifton Shope. Jack was a self-employed carpenter for many years who retired from AMP Inc.. He was a 1947 graduate of Hershey High School. Jack loved to spread the word of Christ through music having played with the gospel group “The Followers” at many churches, prisons, and nursing homes. He was President of the Union Deposit Prayer Group and organized the Camp Meetings at the Tabernacle in Union Deposit. Jack attended the Lebanon United Zion Church. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association; a founding member of the Hummelstown Field & Stream Association; former member of the AMP Nimrods; and was a motorcycle enthusiast. A devout man, Jack dedicated his life to helping others. Even in his death Jack lives on through his desire to have his body donated to science. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Louise Zimmerman Shope, on October 23, 2002; one brother, Louie Shope; and five sisters, Ginny Bremberger, Esther Duncan, Peck Zellers, Rhea Nesbit, and Ruthie Hatter. Jack is survived by two daughters, Linda L. Kerlin wife of David T. of Elizabethtown, and Kandy L. Wyland wife of Charles E. Wyland of Hummelstown; one son, Jack C. Shope husband of Lauren M. of Middletown; seven grandchildren, Melissa Sue Deshong, Jeremy Scott, Christopher Beck, Allison Beck, Ashley Wagner, Jack Shope, and Jack Rupp; fifteen great grandchildren, Joshua Daniel Kylor Zachary Kylor, Zander Millin, Gabby Shipley, Jeremy Scott Kerlin, Jr., Zach Surlock, Ryan Beck, Kelly Beck, Micheal Bonawitz, Christian Mastervich, Brittany Scharf, Lily Wagner, Maryalice Wagner, Joelle Wagner, and Jonathan Rupp; one great grandchild, Audrina Mastervich; three sisters, Carol Houser of Camp Hill, Patsy Sickenburger wife of The Rev. Arden of Washington state, and Betty Lou Seitz wife of Kermit of Hummelstown; and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held on the day of his 88th birthday, Wednesday, December 14, 2016, at 3 PM in the United Church of Christ, 104 East Main Street, Hummelstown, with Pastor M. Richard Long, his pastor, officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family in the church Wednesday from 2 PM until time of the service.
